This is a picture I did before I was going to run a race in Asbury Park. Tilly is an icon of both Coney Island and Asbury Park, but I always seen him as New Jersey.

The lucky cat is just something I’m working on. We can always use a smile and some luck.

The “sad frog” is a pretty popular meme in messaged boards and nerdy blogs. However I just came across the “angry gnome”. This was originally taken from “David the Gnome”, a show I watched as a kid in the early 90s. I loved the image because David was always such a warm and friendly character, that I don’t think I can remember furrowing his brow.

I see this image as another mash-up of new and old stories.

Jeff Songco is making more moves to be the United States representative at the 2023 Venice Biennale. He is now blogging about his life and the arts on the Huffington Post. You can see him discuss the Super Bowl commercials, his recent solo show in San Francisco, and the death of Whitney Houston.

As the reigning champ of the 2011 Buck Art Competition, I also issue a challenge to the rest of the artists in the 2012 Buck Art Competition. Do you have what it takes to take on the champ? I am taking no prisoners this year so come out and take on the king.

The Mail Art Of Riitta Ikonen

Collection pieces designed to be postal using creative and sometimes absurd materials:

In 2004 a holiday project at the University of Brighton titled ‘Location Vocation Vacation’ called for mail art. One post card per week was to be sent as a document of experiences to Margaret Huber, the then second year Illustration tutor.

Around a hundred and fifty A6 sized cards have since been sent (and received) from all over the world. Hair, fish, a sachet of white powder, a piece of broken record, mossy bark… all dutifully delivered by postal workers. Only five cards have never reached their destination, (a few of those due to very poor crocheting)

Margaret still receives mail at irregular intervals.

NewMediator: Alfa Art Fall Art Salon 2011

Alfa Art Gallery is a nonprofit gallery in the heart of New Brunswick’s downtown arts district. The gallery focuses on (but isn’t limited to) showing emerging and mid career painters.

We have previously had the curator at Alfa Art, Jewel Lim, as a previous guest on the podcast.

The current show at the gallery is the Fall 2011 Art Salon. The show features mostly painting and a small amount of sculpture and assemblage. Alfa Art always has what I call “paintings for painters”. The work is always interesting with a heavy focus on technique. I chose three artists to focus on because I found their work the most striking.

Theodosia Tamborlane is an abstract painter from Cranford, NJ. The work is hard to describe so I included a link to her website as well. The work is extremely colorful and filled with layer upon layer of organic forms.

Jamie Greenfield is a Lawerenceville, NJ who works a lot of collage elements into very tight and photo-realistic drawings. You can see Jamie’s work at http://jamiegreenfield.net.

Sarah Petruziello is a Rahway, New Jersey based drawer and painter. Her work really struck me most of all.
