The Battle of Nassau County
This was the first painting I did for Art Gotham’s Square Foot Show.
This painting was based on a topical event that effected me, like Good Night, Glite.
This painting is mixed media and I used acrylic and cut paper. With the exception of the water; Long Island, the characters at the bottom, and the main land mass are all paper. The characters at the bottom are made out of layers of cut paper with pencil used to create the facial features. I’m really proud of this painting.
“The Battle of Nassau County” was inspired by the events of a law enforcement raid gone bad. For those who don’t know Nassau County is a large portion of Long Island. Recently Nassau County Law Enforcement decided to have a raid to crack down on gang members. The raid changed and eventually decided to target illegal immigrants. It got worse when the police raided the homes of legal immigrants who were victims of a previous raid two years ago.
The figures at the bottom represent the swat team/undercover agents who carried out the raid. Weirdly enough some of those undercover officers were wearing cowboy hats, which anyone who has ever been to Long Island will tell you are no way to keep a low profile.
