(Enhanced Podcast)

Today’s episode is an interview with, artist and podcaster, Phillip J. Mellen. We discussed his excellent art podcast and his artistic practice.

Phillip produces the ahtcast, where he interviews contemporary artists he has met and discusses their work with them. Not only are the artists and their work high quality, but the conversations are interesting and easy to listen to. There are many arts podcast available, but Phillip’s podcast is one of the few podcasts that really discusses art from the point of view from the artist.

This painting is unfinished, but I really wanted to share it. I am going to mixing some collage and cut paper work into this image, but the painting part is based on the presidential seal of the United States. I don’t intend this project to be political, but who knows what will happen before it is done. This is going to be the first painting in a series about how I think about contemporary art and how I am trying to use 21st Century tools in my work. I want to use some this series to focus and maybe pay homepage to some of my favorite tools. I know that I’m still working with older techniques right now, but this is a work in progress still.
I have been really inspired by do it yourself culture. The is an ever growing community of tinkerers and hackers online who are making their own projects and customizing the world around them. This project has been particularly inspired by Cory Doctorow’s podcast and the amazing stuff going at Makerbot Industries.
